The Thessaloniki Debate Society was founded in 2003 and is one of the most historic groups of its kind in the Mediterranean. The purpose of the Society is to strengthen democracy and the system of values it embodies through the practice and development of critical thinking, the promotion of dialogue, the enhancement of verbal and linguistic skills, the socialization of students, and the cultivation of fair competition—all within a safe environment.

In addition, the Society represents both Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTH) and the University of Macedonia (UoM) in national and international tournaments. Its activities also include the organization of seminars and workshops, beyond the established weekly meetings.

The central concept around which we evolve, train, and improve is debate. Through education and practice in debate, we organize our own annual tournament and also participate in other tournaments held in Greece and abroad. Debate is an extensive discussion that requires knowledge of rules and experience—and that is exactly what we do. With seminars during each training session focusing on the theoretical aspects of debate, followed immediately by practice, we improve our speaking skills and our overall quality as speakers. No prior experience is required, no registration is needed, and there is no participation fee. The training sessions are addressed to students as well as graduates in general.
