General Information
The "Medieval Rose" Association is a non for profit organization and does not employ any staff. It is based on the island of Rhodes, in Greece. It is administrated by the Board of 7 members. Most of its events are organized on a voluntary basis, occasionally funded by EU programs (e.g ERASMUS+, ALF). The main project of the carrier though is the “Medieval Rose” festival that is mainly funded by public bodies and local sponsors. Every year the events become greater and richer in quality and participations. The projects of the Medieval Festival include local, Greek and international participants and aim at cultural exchange. The participating artisans and re-enactors recreate history, myths and traditions, so to introduce them to the local society and all visitors in an experiential way, through different forms of arts (street theater, dance, music etc) and activities (games, re-enactments, workshops etc). The “Medieval Rose” also organizes, themed guided tours, workshops, seminars and symposiums (conventions) in order to educate locals on re-enactments, old arts and crafts, medieval heritage, history, traditions and customs etc. Our main supporters are: the Periphery of South Aegean, the Municipality of Rhodes and the Chamber of Dodecanese.
Mission and Objectives
Main aim is to maintain the local intangible cultural heritage of the medieval times and highlight the value of the extant byzantine and medieval monumental treasures.
Medieval Rose’s activities contribute to Cultural development, Alternative Education – Edutainment, Enhance of Cultural Tourism, Promotion of the ideal of voluntary work.
Main Projects / Activities
Main project of the "Medieval Rose" association is the Medieval Festival of Rhodes, a cross-sectorial, living history event, a Time Travel to the medieval era of Rhodes, from AD 1306 - 1522.
It is an open air festival, taking place in the streets and the moat of the Medieval Town of Rhodes since 2006. The festival includes a variety of activities meeting all interests: dance, live music, pageantry, street theatre, medieval games and sports, reenactments, customs, tradition, all related to the medieval era. Most events are inspired by the medieval history of the island and revive the everyday life as well as legendary events of the time.
The idea is to create the sense of a Journey in Time, where the visitors meet the artists (and re-enactors) and interact with them as if they would be in the Middle Ages. Participating artists are coming from Greece and Europe and they are dressed in a medieval manner. All sets and props used are made of appropriate to the epoch materials.
The festival is open to public and attracts diverse audiences.
