The Jean Monnet European Centre of Excellence of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (NKUA) was established in 2000 under an agreement between the NKUA and the European Commission, with the central aim of promoting an interdisciplinary approach to European integration in connection with corresponding Greek policies, while mobilizing relevant academic staff and experts from related fields.
Through its long-standing and multifaceted research and educational activities, the Centre has contributed to the international visibility and prestige of the NKUA and to the improvement of its position in international rankings. Over more than two decades of activity, the Centre has implemented dozens of research and educational programs focusing on European governance and related Greek policies.
Characteristic programs have included topics such as the EU’s economic governance, the Common Foreign and Security Policy, asylum and human rights law, the Union’s strategic autonomy in the modern world, and others. In its most recent phase, the Centre has focused on the legal and political dimensions of the European management of the refugee and migration issue, as well as on matters of security and energy in the Eastern Mediterranean.
During its operation, more than 3,300 participants — primarily postgraduate students, researchers, public sector officials, and others — have taken part in its educational programs, conferences, seminars, workshops, and public discussions organized by the Centre. The Centre’s scientific network includes over 200 academics and specialized experts.
The Centre’s publishing program comprises five books (in collaboration with publishing houses in Athens), twelve publications in the series “The Athens Jean Monnet Papers”, and four in the series “National Strategy Papers". Both series are supported by a peer review committee composed of internal and external (non-NKUA) reviewers.
Furthermore, the Centre publishes, in a special section of its website entitled “The Researchers’ Forum”, research papers by postgraduate students, PhD candidates, and young scholars prepared within the framework of the Centre’s research programs. The published papers in “The Researchers’ Forum” exceed ninety.
